What we can do in today’s climate

The context of therapy will be slightly different during the current crisis. We are offering telephone consultations for parents of younger children and/or adolescents in order to establish whether we can help you and your family at this time. Telephone work and virtual meetings are proving to be beneficial in the following areas:

  • Giving families an external adult who can be objective.

  • Looking at how anxiety can impact all of our lives and working out together how your child/family can build resilience.

  • To consider how the current situation might be increasing or perhaps decreasing pre-existing symptoms. We can then think together about how the evolving situation will impact these symptoms.

  • Response to the pandemic will vary between individuals, even within the same family. Some will be thriving on the ‘downtime’ and less hectic schedules. Others will be ‘managing’ but needing some input from people around them. Others still will be extremely fearful and anxious about a variety of issues, such as the unknown which lies ahead, concerns about the physical health of family members and apparent lack of control at this time.

    • This reduced feeling of control can show itself in a variety of ways such as behavioural issues, increased withdrawal and communication and possible issues with sleeping and eating.

    • Younger children may have become more clingy, especially at night, or have started to wet the bed again when previously this had passed.

    • Older children may demonstrate more irritable behaviour and mood swings and even more time in their bedroom on social media.

PhoenixSoul can offer a short term intervention looking at troubleshooting and strategies, or it may evolve into a longer-term piece of work as other issues arise.

The governing body, UKCP, have asked that we as therapists have reviewed the guidance regarding remote working set out on their website. We are to adhere to the Code of Ethics and Professional Practice as we would do under normal circumstances. The parts of the code which specifically apply to our work are the following;

  • To confirm each client/family consent with the specifics of what is being offered as there is more flexibility at present.

  • To understand the limits of our competence and stay within them and are honest with potential and current clients.

We have undertaken webinars and online training regarding remote working.

We have confirmed that any current and online virtual work is covered by our indemnity insurance.
